Gorillaz: The world is absurd, it's better to go "crazy" together
NetEase Cloud Music, March 2023
PART 1
Q: Please describe your new album in 3 words!
2D: Mind gone blank
Murdoc: Murdoc is god.
Q: Where did the inspiration for «Cracker Island» come from?
2D: I've been brainwashed a few times in this past year, so there's a lot of things I don't remember to be honest. It's my fault for joining so many cults!
Q: You came to Los Angeles in the process of making your new album, can we view this as a new chapter for the band? What's different there compared to London?
Noodle: Los Angeles and London are very different. This city's energy has a new and sometimes strange way of inspiring us. We've started a cult here. I'm not sure if it’s going to succeed, but chaos is always going to be our source of inspiration.
Q: Whats the hardest part of making a new album?
Murdoc: Plenty of things are easy for me, mate. Afterall, there's not many artists who can record a banging album whilst running the most successful cult in Los Angeles. I'm just a miracle, straight up.
Q: Are there any new updates we can expect from the band in the future?
Russel: “The Rupture” is coming. It's a secret passage, a passage that leads into the gap between space and time somewhere — into the new tomorrow? To Cracker Island? Time will tell eventually. But all our troubles will vanish once we're there, we just need to figure out how and where it'll happen. Pack our sandwiches, pack our bags, and get ready.
PART 2
Q: You're always trying new musical styles for each of your albums. What have you been experimenting with lately?
2D: Whale music.
Q: What is that?
2D: I was once trapped in a whale. The songs it sang were very suitable for sleeping and thinking. But it's a bit too difficult to sing like that whale. I think it's because our life experiences are too different.
Q: Let's talk about daily life. What are you all up to when you're not making music?
2D: I've been busy ever since joining Murdoc’s cult. Everyday he gives me a list of chores to do. This is yesterdays:
2D’s house chore list
8:00 AM
Bring a cup of Irish Coffee to Murdoc’s bed.
9:00 AM
Dig a hole in the garden.
10:00 AM
Cover the hole.
Repeat until midnight.
Q: Ah! As expected of Murdoc!
Q: What's the craziest thing you've done recently?
Murdoc: It's not crazy at all (from a commercial standpoint it's completely logical), but I'm currently producing my own brand of celebrity fragrance, “Murdoc's Essence".
Q: What kind of smell is that?
Murdoc: It's got real, genuine Murdoc Niccals (that's me) bathwater, along with a secret herbal dairy formula. Boil the two together and you've got a scent that can only be described as “one of a kind’. Actually, we've been hoping to enter the Chinese market. I can give you a little sample if your company's interested.
Q: I don't think I need that right now.
Q: Say something for the fans in China--
Murdoc: Love the people, but love Murdoc even more!
