Gorillaz drummer Russel Hobbs aims high with ambitions of performing in space
Metro, March 2023
Gorillaz star Russel Hobbs isn’t monkeying around when it comes to his ambitions for the world’s biggest virtual band.
In an exclusive interview with Guilty Pleasures, the group’s very animated drummer unveiled his sky-high – literally – plans.
‘Take the live show up a notch… way up. Play a gig on a space station. See what happens to kick drumbeats in zero gravity,’ he teased, adding with a note of caution: ‘Goals are good, but can get you lost sometimes.’
Gorillaz – completed by 2D, Murdoc Niccals and Noodle – are the cartoon brainchild of Jamie Hewlett and Blur’s Damon Albarn. But they have taken on a life of their own and acclaimed eighth album Cracker Island looks set to top the UK charts this week.

Given the record’s title, can the fan favourite remember the last time he went crackers? ‘Most crackers…’ he pondered. ‘A whole packet. Jacob’s Cream. One mouthful. No additional liquid. That was a wild night.’
Brit award winner Russel also shared that he likes to unwind from a hard day’s drumming with a spot of ‘chess-boxing’, adding: ‘Best game I ever played. Alternating rounds of chess and boxing until someone gets checkmate, or knocked out.
‘Hardest part is trying to move the chess pieces wearing boxing gloves. The chess boosts your brain cells, and the boxing takes them away, so it balances out nicely. Could be wrong, but I believe it was invented by the Wu-Tang Clan.’
